Sharp Hospital Named ‘World’s Most Beautiful’

San Diego –  In a recent issue of HealthExecNews, Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa was awarded the top spot in their list of “the world’s 25 most beautiful hospitals.”  Spanning the globe, facilities were considered across four continents and in 11 countries.  In a building category where design and function coexisting is requisite, the magazine underscored features promoting patient healing while balancing interior and exterior aesthetics.

Sharp Memorial was selected for its numerous consumer-focused amenities, including privacy inducing separate elevators for patients and visitors, a tranquil rooftop garden, and museum quality artwork.   Additionally, every room in the 368-bed hospital is a private one appointed with a pull out couch to accommodate guests.  Loved ones are encouraged to “room-in” providing patients with a crucial adjunct to care and ultimately hastening their recovery times.

Clearly visible from the 163 freeway, the new Stephen Birch HealthCare Center at Sharp Memorial Hospital opened in 2009 to rave reviews.  Design features include warm woods, nature-inspired elements and a soothing contemporary color scheme.

According to Mike Murphy, Sharp HealthCare President and CEO, the designation was a complete surprise.  “We didn’t know that a survey was being conducted.  Needless to say, we’re very pleased with the results.”

  1. Ironically, this building exterior was nominated for an onion in the 2008 O&O. Some folks, including myself, thought it really wasn’t that bad.
