San Diego – The 13th & Market Project is now under construction directly west of the Albertson’s grocery store in East Village of downtown San Diego. Prior to the economic melt-down of 2008, the site was slated to be developed with a 14 story mixed use residential condominium project, named Market Street Village II. The new project is scaled down to a 6 story market rate apartments project with even a scaled down name – 13th & Market – a sign of the times perhaps but the project is a welcome addition to a neighborhood riddled with empty lots or surface parking left over from demolition in anticipation of large residential condominium projects that disappeared with the collapse of the economy. The developer is Hanover Properties and the architect is Carrier Johnson + Culture.
With the development of Thomas Jefferson School of Law, the new Public Library, the soon to break ground 15th & Market Project, and the expansion of City College, East Village is getting some much needed continuity. Additionally, with the aforementioned schools, the New School of Architecture, Garfield and San Diego High Schools, and a new charter high school slated for the new library, the area is acquiring a decidedly academic flavor.
