Like most plans for public spaces San Diego’s Downtown Draft Mobility Plan is full of generalities posing as specific solutions. Complete Streets is a great concept, but its application needs to be carefully cultivated based on the needs and long term use of the block on which it is being installed.
Civic San Diego has released a draft of the long awaited Downtown San Diego Mobility Plan. It proposes significant changes to the street grid with a goal of reducing travel by car and increasing trips by bike and foot. Another objective is to lower carbon emissions in accordance with state law.
With vibrant neighborhoods, gentle terrain, the Big Bay and year round sunshine, Downtown San Diego figures to be on every list of America’s great cycling communities. We have everything… except the bicyclists. Why? It’s not very safe. The street grid favors cars. That’s about to change.
