Yesterday, the San Diego Convention Center Board selected Denver Architect Curtis Fentress and his proposal for expansion of the San Diego Convention Center. The selected proposal adds 870,000 square feet (to the 2.6-million-square-foot center), a five-acre rooftop park, a truck tunnel for exhibitors, a 500-room hotel, and an anticipated cost well under the original estimate. More details can be found in the Nov. 10, 2010 San Diego Union Tribune article about the expansion.
I greatly appreciate the thoughtful and creative design to accomplish both the necessary expansion of the convention center and the additional need for open space in our urban core. The “vistas” from this park would be amazing. It could also be a great sculpture park. The design does not obstruct or create a large barrier between the city and the bay.
