Sunday, August 11, 2013 was San Diego’s first Ciclovia inspired event named CicloSDias.
The event involved closing roads to motorized traffic along an approximate 5 mile route, allowing only pedestrians, bicyclists, and skaters. The route traveled North and South on 30th and Fern between K St. and North Park Way, then East-West along Landis St. and Wightman St. to Cherokee Point Elementary School.
There appeared be great attendance but not so crowded as to be hazardous. The crowd included hipsters, families, and oldsters. By the looks of it, retail along the way also enjoyed a bump, especially beverage and dining establishments. There was even a bit of entertainment along the way.
Ciclovia events originated in Bogota Columbia in the early 1980s (where they are now weekly events) and are now held worldwide.
