About Marin Gertler

Marin Gertler is a an award winning Design Director / Architect with Gensler’s San Diego office. Marin was raised in Switzerland and France and after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a B.F.A and B.Arch, he relocated to San Diego with his wife, Rocio Lastras De Gertler, a landscape architect from Mexico, to work for the design firm Safdie Rabines Architects. Key contributions at SRA include; the award winning UCLA South Campus Student Center, Mercado Del Barrio & the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge.

 

Marin is passionate about the intersection of the public and private work in complex urban environments and has made this the focus of his work. Since joining Gensler, Marin has become an office leader for mixed-use and the Southwest Regional leader for the residential practice area. He has lead the design for a wide range of projects including; Mesa College Center for Business and Technology, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, IDEA1 , Heights of Del Mar, One Paseo, Music Box (formally known as Anthology) & most recently Fifth Ave Landing.

 

Outside of work Marin is an active mentor for the up and coming architectural and design community. He has co-taught a studio as an adjunct professor at the New School of Architecture, which focused on analyzing and repurposing existing structures in downtown San Diego. Marin is also very involved with the Urban Land Institute (ULI); he is an active member of the ULI residential council, a board member and co-chair of the ULI Young Leaders program and has taken part in a TAP program to do a feasibility study for a local community. Marin was recently recognized by the ULI for their global 2016 class of ‘40 under 40’ Land use professionals.

A fresh pulpo (octopus) tostada is exotic enough to take anyone’s palette on a journey. I recently had the opportunity to join a group of 15 young land use professionals from San Diego for a day of discovery and delight in our sister city, Tijuana, Mexico, on a hot, dry August afternoon. It begins with the new pedestrian crossing in San Ysidro, which is as sterile and contrasting to the vibrant life beyond as it gets. The long walk down the crossing feels like a transformation, one that is deeply experiential. Once on ‘the other side’, it is clear that a revitalization is underway. There dust in the air from all the construction, as a new wave of entrepreneurs look to transform this young city through creative mixed-use projects, design and cuisine.
